Volunteer Positions
VOLUNTEER, WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS (1996 – 2006)
I was a monthly (and for several years a twice monthly) volunteer visiting Jewish inmates at several Washington state prisons. For several years I co-coordinated group holiday programs of visitors (from Congregation Eitz Or, a Renewal denomination synagogue; during one holiday program visit we were joined by Univ of Washington students from the campus Hillel Center) for major holiday program visits, e.g. Chanukah, Passover, Purim.
I also led one interfaith education program for inmates of a variety of backgrounds with a slide presentation about Under the Wings Holocaust education art. Now-retired University of Washington campus pastor Rev. Brooke Rolston attended and joined me in co-leading the Q&A.
During one Jewish group holiday program, a prison chaplain asked if I would speak with inmates attending a Christian service and, joined by 2 other Jewish program visitors, we talked about the Jewish holiday, then, using the lai-lai-lai method of Jewish singing when one doesn't know the Hebrew lyrics, we sang a Jewish song and the Christian inmates joined in singing with us; it was very moving as they sang with great gusto.
For several years my volunteering was at the DOC Sponsor-level. My first several years of visits were arranged by Gary Friedman, of blessed memory, who was the Washington state DOC Jewish chaplain and the national director of a non-profit, Jewish Prison Services International, which aids and assists Jewish prison inmates.

VOLUNTEER LIAISON TO GORDON GILKEY, LATE PRINTS CURATOR, PORTLAND ART MUSEUM, FOR ACQUISITION OF PRINTS FOR THE GORDON & VIVIAN GILKEY PRINTS COLLECTION - OF PRINTS BY PRINTMAKERS IN KRAKOW (1985); ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND (1987)
Volunteer liaison for Gordon Gilkey (1912-2000), Prints Curator, Portland Art Museum, Oregon.
Gilkey created the large prints collection at the museum bearing he and his wife Vivien’s name. As liason I brought prints by Polish printmakers from Krakow, 1985; and prints by printmakers who work working in Aberdeen for the Gilkey collection. Gilkey paid each of the printmakers from his own savings; he was very grateful for these important additions to the collection.
Artists in Poland [during the last years of the Communist regime; Poles were still suffering from the repression of the Solidarnosc/Solidarity trade union and freedom movement] and Scotland were very grateful for both the purchase of their art & acquisition into a large and important U.S. museum's prints collection.
Segan's role in assisting the development of the collection was acknowledged in a preface Gilkey authored for the catalog of this exhibit, including prints from the Krakow area print-makers loaned from the PAM Gilkey Collection: "Contemporary Eastern European Prints from Oregon Art Institute & the J. Noblett Gallery, Santa Rosa Junior College Art Gallery, 1989."

LED A GROUP STUDENT - PAINTED MURAL, B'NAI B'RITH HILLEL, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY, CARBONDALE (1976)
On a large wall in the SIU-C campus Hillel the artist led the painting of a Judaic-history and culture-themed mural. (Unfortunately, I didn't take photos of the completed work, which I guesstimate measured a wall length perhaps 14 feet long and 3 to 4 feet in height. I would love to see photos if any Hillel goers, ca. 1975 on , who took any photos that include footage of the mural. When I visited campus, spring 1996 as a guest lecturer, SIU Faner Hall Art Museum, Hillel was long gone from that 1970's location on ‘the island.’)

VOLUNTEER, RED HERRING COFFEEHOUSE, URBANA, ILLINOIS, 1973-‘74
Several times a week volunteer with set-up, clean-up in the basement coffeehouse for evening events with local and national visiting musicians; volunteered with Thanksgiving day meal prep for community attendees; volunteered with film projection setup in the upstairs building sanctuary.
