Memorial to murdered U.S. Federal police officer Stephen Tyrone Johns and to child Holocaust victims

Art: 2021
Media: Mosaic; four drawings; bric-a-brac mounted on the frame and wood shelf: Two toy wood chairs; a toy wood doggie; a metal and wood candlestick holder in the design of a bird; a toy wood canoe, 2 oars; a toy wooden horse. The horse has 3 old metal washers attached on the outside of the wood; I'd picked these up from the street on walks.
Size: 36.25 in. H x 28 W [92 cm. H x 71.12 W]

The drawing of Officer Johns was drawn from photos I saw on the internet. As the drawing is not rectilinear (square, or a rectangle) I hand constructed a wood frame with pieces of wood to surround and protect  the drawing; it's under plexiglass.

Stephen Tyrone Johns was born in Maryland, October 4, 1969. A police officer at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, D.C., he was shot to death on June 10, 2009 by an elderly Christian American terrorist at the entryway of the museum. In 2021, Republican state legislators and governors now lead efforts in numerous states to not allow voting by black, Hispanic, elderly and disabled Americans. While news reports state that millions of voters who support former President Trump (an unapologetic racist, anti-Semite, Islamophobe, and anti-Hispanic bigot) individually claim to be non-racist, these campaigns to destroy American democracy are, in actuality and deed, a celebration of the race hate legacy of slavery in America, and of decades of Ku Klux Klan terrorism and murder. Former President Trump has refused to apologize for his years of national leadership of the "birther" race campaign against former President Obama and  his family, and against all African-Americans. Former President Trump has also refused to apologize for his virulently anti-Semitic tweeted "meme" image during the 2016 election campaign showing a photo of Mrs. Clinton with money and a Star of David, and the inset words Most Corrupt Candidate Ever! That imagery is derived from the visual hate propaganda of the Third Reich's violently anti-Semitic newspaper Der Sturmer of the 1930's.The drawing at upper left was drawn from a photo of a child in the Warsaw ghetto, during the Nazi occupation of Poland. The ghetto was a concentration-death camp. It's in the chapter Dzeici (children); in the book The 45th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising 1943-1988. (Interpress,Warsaw, 1988.) That child was also previously drawn in the multi-image Under the Wings series (UTW) 35.The drawing at upper right was drawn from a photo taken Jan. 1945 by a Soviet soldier at the Nazi's Auschwitz death camp, in what had been Nazi occupied Poland. The photo is of several child inmates alive at liberation. The photo is seen in The Pictorial History of the Holocaust, page 358 (Yad Vashem, Jerusalem,1990).

The drawing at lower right, drawn early June 2021, was drawn from a black & white photo of a Romani or Sinti boy imprisoned at the Nazi's Auschwitz death camp, in Nazi occupied Poland, during the Holocaust and WWII. That photo is in the book Never Again, authored by late British historian Martin Gilbert (Universe Books, NY, 2000).
